Cobitis lutheri is a little-known spiny loach endemic to specific river basins in Greece, including the Evros and Nestos drainages. It has a classic Cobitis build — slender body, flattened ventrally, with rows of dark blotches on a pale background — but is distinguished by subtle differences in blotch shape and lateral band structure compared to the widespread C. taenia. Its restricted range and rarity in the trade give it appeal among European freshwater fish specialists.

Care in the aquarium follows the standard for the genus: cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with deep fine sand substrate. As a species from oligotrophic Greek rivers, it is intolerant of poor water quality and requires regular water changes to maintain pristine conditions. A group of three to five is recommended to encourage social behaviour and reduce timidity.

Feeding consists of micro sinking foods: pellets, daphnia, cyclops, and finely chopped bloodworm. Luther's Spiny Loach makes an excellent and distinctive addition to a Greek or Balkan freshwater biotope display, paired with the endemic cyprinids and gobies from its native rivers.
