Macrolepidotus Chalceus

Chalceus erythrurus, the Yellow-finned or Macrolepidotus Chalceus, is similar in form and habit to C. macrolepidotus but distinguished by its vivid yellow-to-orange fin colouration rather than pink-red. Its large, reflective scales give it a striking metallic appearance, and its powerful, streamlined body marks it as an agile, fast-swimming predator of the surface zone.

Care requirements mirror those of C. macrolepidotus: a very large, tightly covered aquarium, strong filtration, and tankmates large enough not to be eaten. The species is less commonly available and therefore eagerly sought by large-tank enthusiasts and collectors of unusual South American characins. Groups of five or more display impressive schooling behaviour at the surface.

Feeding large floating foods is recommended: high-quality large pellets, freeze-dried krill, frozen lance fish, and larger frozen invertebrates. Excellent water quality and large regular water changes are essential for long-term health in this demanding species.
