Macrophthalma Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla macrophthalma is an immediately striking pike cichlid from the Essequibo River basin of Guyana, distinguished by eyes that are proportionally larger than any other Crenicichla. These enlarged eyes are an adaptation to the deeply tannin-stained, low-light blackwater habitats it favours — dark forest streams where vision in murky conditions provides a predatory advantage.

The body patterning of C. macrophthalma is unusually delicate for a pike cichlid — a fine reticulated network of dark lines overlying a pale background, with a subdued lateral stripe. This, combined with those remarkable eyes, makes it one of the most distinctive members of the genus. In captivity it demands genuine blackwater conditions: very soft, very acidic water, leaf litter, dim lighting, and tannin additions.

Reaching about 20 cm, C. macrophthalma can be housed in a 200 L blackwater species tank. It is rarely exported and considered a collector's item. Feeding can require patience initially — live foods help trigger feeding responses — but frozen meaty items are accepted once settled.
