Magdalena River Stingray

Potamotrygon magdalenae is restricted to the Magdalena and Sinú river basins of Colombia, draining into the Caribbean rather than the Atlantic via the Amazon or Orinoco. This makes it biologically distinct from most other potamotrygonids and slightly more tolerant of elevated hardness. Its disc is brownish with small pale ocelli and moderate dark patterning. In captivity it adapts reasonably well to slightly harder, more neutral water than most of its relatives, though soft conditions are still preferred for optimal health. It has been maintained and bred in Colombian research facilities. Its relatively moderate water requirements make it a slightly more accessible starting point for keepers in areas with naturally harder tap water.
