Magnum Pleco L047

Baryancistrus sp. L047, the Magnum Pleco, is a large and impressive loricariid from the rocky fast-water sections of the Rio Xingu. Its dark grey-brown body is covered with small pale cream spots and it bears a proportionally enormous dorsal fin that it can raise and lower dramatically. At up to 35 cm it is one of the larger Baryancistrus and requires a correspondingly spacious aquarium.

Like all Baryancistrus, the Magnum Pleco thrives in warm (26–30°C), well-oxygenated water with strong flow. It grazes biofilm and algae from hard surfaces and should be provided with smooth boulders and quality sinking foods. Driftwood provides both cover and a supplementary food source through biofilm growth. Robust filtration is essential given its size and waste production.

The Magnum Pleco can be semi-aggressive toward other large plecos and should be kept singly unless the aquarium is very large with multiple clearly defined territories. It is peaceful toward unrelated tankmates and poses no threat to fish it cannot fit in its mouth.
