Makue Tometes

Tometes makue is restricted to the rocky, high-gradient rivers of the Guiana Shield, where it specialises in scraping attached algae and aquatic plants from exposed rock surfaces. It was formally described relatively recently and remains extraordinarily rare in trade, occasionally appearing from Brazilian exporters.

Its rapids-dwelling origin means it demands exceptional water quality, high oxygen levels, and strong water movement. In return, it offers an unparalleled conservation talking point and an unusual body form with a more pointed snout than typical pacus. Strict adherence to ethical acquisition practices is essential given its rarity.

Not subject to piranha restrictions but export may be regulated.
