The Malayan Shrimp is a Caridina species native to freshwater streams and forested waterways of Malaysia and surrounding Southeast Asian regions. Unlike many of the elaborately coloured Caridina and Neocaridina varieties popular in the hobby, the Malayan Shrimp displays a natural, understated appearance — a translucent to olive-brown body with subtle darker markings — that suits biotope-style aquascapes and natural planted tank designs particularly well.
The Malayan Shrimp is one of the more forgiving Caridina species in terms of water parameter flexibility, tolerating a wider pH and GH range than Crystal Shrimp or Taiwan Bee variants. While it still benefits from soft to moderately soft water, it does not require reverse osmosis treatment in most cases and adapts reasonably well to slightly harder tap water supplies after conditioning.
In the aquarium, Malayan Shrimp are industrious and active grazers that spend the majority of their time foraging over substrate, plant surfaces, and hardscape for biofilm, algae, and fine organic debris. They are completely peaceful and do not harm plants or tank mates of any size. Their relatively modest demands and adaptable nature make them an excellent bridge species for aquarists transitioning from Neocaridina to more demanding Caridina shrimp, while also being an attractive and functional choice for natural-style planted aquariums seeking a native Southeast Asian invertebrate.
