Malaysian Driftwood

Malaysian Driftwood is one of the most widely used hardscape materials in the freshwater aquarium hobby, prized for its dense, heavy wood that sinks quickly and its rich dark-brown-to-black colouration. Each piece has a naturally irregular, branching or log-like form with organic grooves and textures that give planted aquariums an immediate sense of age and authenticity.

The tannins released by Malaysian Driftwood gradually soften and acidify the water, mimicking the blackwater conditions of South American and Southeast Asian river biotopes. This makes it particularly beneficial for species such as Discus, Apistogramma, Cardinal Tetras, and freshwater shrimp that prefer soft, slightly acidic water. The tannin-stained water takes on an attractive amber hue that many hobbyists find aesthetically pleasing.

Moss, Anubias, and Bucephalandra attach readily to Malaysian Driftwood, and over time the surface develops a natural biofilm coating that grazing invertebrates will feed from. Pre-soaking for several days to weeks before aquarium placement will reduce initial tannin release and prevent excessive water discolouration.
