Manzanita Branch

Manzanita (Arctostaphylos spp.) is a California chaparral shrub whose twisted, smooth-barked branches produce some of the most elegant and naturally sculptural driftwood available to aquascapers. The reddish-brown wood with smooth bark remnants creates a warm, organic aesthetic distinct from Asian driftwood species, and each piece has a unique, twisting form that lends compositions a sense of natural movement.

Manzanita branches are particularly popular for above-water paludarium and vivarium branches as well as submerged aquascape use, as their smooth bark resists decomposition and retains an attractive appearance both wet and dry. The branching structure creates excellent perching and shelter opportunities for fish, frogs, and other paludarium inhabitants.

Manzanita is notable for its minimal tannin release, which makes it ideal for high-clarity aquariums and setups with species sensitive to organic tannin compounds. It sinks readily after a brief soak and will last for many years without significant surface degradation.
