Mapiritensis Eartheater

Satanoperca mapiritensis is a seldom-encountered eartheater from the Venezuelan Llanos and Orinoco tributary systems. It is a more slender species than its congeners, with a subtler patterning of iridescent scales and a small but distinct lateral spot. Its rarity in the trade gives it significant collector value, and specimens in prime condition are breathtaking.

As a blackwater Satanoperca, this species demands clean, soft, acidic water and is unforgiving of lapses in water quality. A spacious tank with deep fine sand, tannin-producing botanicals, and efficient filtration provides the ideal environment. It is best kept in small groups to promote natural social behaviour.

Satanoperca mapiritensis is believed to be a biparental mouthbrooder following the standard Satanoperca breeding pattern. Breeding in captivity is rare and represents a significant achievement. Dedicated keepers who can source and maintain this species are encouraged to document and share captive breeding results.
