Marbled Sleeper Goby

Oxyeleotris marmorata, the Marble Goby or Sand Goby, is one of the largest freshwater gobies in the world and a highly prized food and sport fish across Southeast Asia. It is distributed from Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam through peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, inhabiting large rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and tidal estuaries. The body is impressively large and marbled cream, gold, and dark brown in an intricate pattern that camouflages it perfectly against rocky or sandy riverbeds. It is a formidable ambush predator, lying motionless for hours before engulfing fish, shrimp, and crustaceans with its enormous gape. In the aquarium it requires a very large tank, excellent filtration, and a diet of substantial meaty foods. Despite its predatory nature, it is a docile, slow-moving fish that becomes remarkably tame. Not suitable for community setups with any fish small enough to be swallowed.
