Marmorata Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla marmorata is a spectacular large pike cichlid from the Tapajós and Xingu river systems in Brazil, named for the intricate marbled pattern of dark irregular blotches over a pale gold-cream body that distinguishes it from other large Crenicichla. It is one of the most sought-after species in the genus for its combination of size and extraordinary patterning.

Inhabiting clear to moderately soft river systems, C. marmorata requires clean, warm, slightly soft water with moderate flow and good oxygenation. A large sandy-substrate tank with plenty of shelter — large driftwood, rock overhangs, and cave arrangements — is essential for its psychological comfort and breeding. Females display red-orange belly colouration during breeding.

Captive breeding has been documented in dedicated large setups. The species follows the large Crenicichla cave-spawning pattern where the female guards the clutch and the male patrols the wider territory. It is a fish for the serious, committed large cichlid specialist.
