Marulius Snakehead

Channa marulius, known as the Bull Snakehead or Great Snakehead, is among the largest members of the genus, capable of exceeding 120 cm and 30 kg in the wild. It is found across a vast range from India and Sri Lanka through Bangladesh and into much of Southeast Asia. Juveniles are attractively patterned with red-orange blotches on the head and forebody over a black background, transitioning to the adult dark olive-grey with bold lateral blotching as the fish matures.

Ownership of this species demands extraordinary commitment: tanks exceeding 2000 litres, industrial-grade filtration, and decades-long planning for the fish's potential lifespan. Despite these demands, it remains available in the trade as juveniles are undeniably impressive. Feeding is straightforward as it accepts almost any meaty food item.

Breeding in aquariums is essentially undocumented due to the size requirements. In natural habitats, both parents guard a floating egg mass in dense vegetation. This species may be subject to import restrictions in some countries and prospective buyers must verify local regulations.
