Masdevallia coccinea

Masdevallia coccinea is among the most widely cultivated species in the genus, valued for its racemes of large, intensely coloured flowers ranging from deep magenta to scarlet and orange depending on the clone. It is native to the Colombian Andes at elevations of 2,500–3,500 m, where temperatures rarely exceed 18 °C and cloud cover maintains near-constant humidity. In a paludarium, it requires a dedicated cool zone and excellent ventilation to thrive.

Mature plants produce multiple flower spikes per growth, and well-grown specimens with several mature growths can display a dozen or more flowers simultaneously. The bold, almost artificial-looking colour of M. coccinea makes it one of the most visually striking orchids available for paludarium cultivation. It grows without pseudobulbs, meaning it cannot tolerate drying out between waterings.
