Mastacembelus polli is among the rarest and most visually striking of the Tanganyikan spiny eels, bearing bold irregular dark blotches on a pale or cream background. Named after Max Poll, the renowned Belgian ichthyologist who described much of the Tanganyikan fauna, it is a prized find for dedicated Tanganyika biotope aquarists and spiny eel enthusiasts.

Care mirrors that of other Tanganyikan Mastacembelus species: hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated water, fine sand substrate for burrowing, and ample rockwork caves for shelter. This species is primarily crepuscular to nocturnal and benefits greatly from subdued lighting or a tank-wide approach that dims gradually. It is a slow-moving, cautious fish that takes time to settle after introduction.

Once established, Mastacembelus polli becomes less reclusive and will emerge to feed. Frozen bloodworm and earthworm are favoured, and many individuals can eventually be trained onto sinking carnivore pellets placed near their burrow entrance.
