Maulbrüter Apistogramma

Apistogramma barlowi 'Maulbrüter' holds the extraordinary distinction of being one of the very few Apistogramma species confirmed to practice mouthbrooding, a behavior almost unheard of in the genus. The female picks up eggs after spawning and broods them buccally for up to two weeks, making this species a must-have for cichlid breeding enthusiasts.

Native to the Peruvian Amazon, A. barlowi inhabits slow-moving, heavily vegetated streams with soft, acidic water. Males are larger and more colorful, displaying yellow-orange flanks with dark fin edging during breeding displays.

Care requirements mirror other Apistogramma species, but keepers should be aware that females undergoing mouthbrooding should not be stressed. A species-only tank or a very peaceful community is strongly recommended to allow natural behavior.
