Maylandia hajomaylandi is one of the most visually spectacular zebra group mbuna and a genuine collector's item due to its restricted range and relative rarity in the trade. Males display a bright electric-blue body with a bold, contrasting orange to red-orange dorsal fin — a combination that is instantly arresting in the aquarium. The species is endemic to Chinyankwazi Island in the central lake.

In the wild, M. hajomaylandi occupies the exposed rocky shorelines of Chinyankwazi Island, competing with other island mbuna for territorial feeding positions. The combination of island isolation and limited range means this species is rarely available from wild-caught specimens, with most aquarium fish being tank-bred.

In the aquarium, Maylandia hajomaylandi is moderately aggressive and rewards good water quality with spectacular colouration. The blue-and-orange contrast of males is maximised with spirulina-based feeding and carotenoid supplementation. A harem setup with one male to two or three females works ideally and the species can be combined with other moderately aggressive mbuna.
