Maylandia lombardoi, the Kenyi or Lombardoi Cichlid, is famed for its remarkable and unusual sex-linked colour reversal. Young fish and females are vivid blue with well-defined black vertical bars — typically the 'male' colouration in mbuna. As males mature and become dominant, they undergo a dramatic transformation to an intense golden-yellow colouration with minimal barring, the opposite of most mbuna species.

Originally described from Mbenji Island, Lombardoi cichlids inhabit exposed rocky shorelines at shallow depths, competing aggressively for food and territory. The species is notoriously aggressive even by mbuna standards, with males pursuing females, juveniles, and rival males relentlessly in confined spaces.

In the aquarium, Maylandia lombardoi is best kept by experienced hobbyists who understand how to manage cichlid aggression. A large tank, heavy overstocking, and abundant rockwork are essential. The species is stunning and fascinating due to its colour reversal, but demands responsible husbandry to prevent injury or death of subordinate fish.
