Mbipia lutea is a Victorian haplochromine from rocky littoral zones of Lake Victoria that occupies an ecological niche similar to algae-eating mbuna from Lake Malawi. The species name 'lutea' refers to its yellow colouration, which is especially pronounced in males. Mbipia lutea uses its specialised dentition to scrape algae from rock surfaces and is best provided with ample rocky surfaces in the aquarium to express this natural behaviour.

As an algae scraper, M. lutea differs from many Victorian haplochromines in having a predominantly herbivorous diet. Spirulina-based pellets and flakes should form the bulk of the diet, with invertebrate foods offered as supplements rather than staples. Feeding high-protein diets exclusively can result in digestive issues.

This species is moderately aggressive and territorial, with males defending algae-rich rocky territories. Keeping one male with two to three females in a well-decorated rocky aquarium produces natural behaviour and facilitates breeding.
