Mbu Giant Puffer (Juvenile)

Juvenile Tetraodon mbu are frequently offered in the trade at 5–10 cm when their vivid reticulated cream-and-brown patterning is at its most striking and their dimensions appear manageable. However, this is the world's largest freshwater puffer fish, ultimately reaching up to 67 cm and requiring an enormous aquarium of 1,000 litres or more at adult size. Buyers must fully plan for this eventual requirement before purchase. Juveniles are more active and exploratory than adults, which tend toward a heavier, more sedentary lifestyle. The diet should include small hard-shelled invertebrates from the outset to establish beak-wear habits. Growth rate is rapid in good conditions, and fish outgrow standard aquaria within a few years.
