Mchenga eucinostomus

Mchenga eucinostomus is a moderately sized cichlid from Lake Malawi inhabiting sandy open-bottom areas and transitional zones between rocky and open-water habitats. Males display attractive blue to silver-blue colouration with subtle fin highlights. The species is noticeably more slender and streamlined than rocky mbuna, reflecting its adaptation to open-water foraging over sandy substrates.

In the aquarium, Mchenga eucinostomus is active and fast-swimming, preferring open space over dense rockwork. It appreciates a sandy substrate for occasional digging and will explore all levels of the water column. Less aggressive than typical mbuna, it is suitable for mixed Malawi communities with other moderately peaceful cichlids. As a maternal mouthbrooder, females incubate eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. Standard hard, alkaline water chemistry is required.
