The Medusa Pleco (L059) is one of the most extraordinary members of the Loricariidae family, endemic to the rocky rapids of the Rio Xingu. Its defining characteristic is an unusually dense mat of elongated, curling odontodes — hair-like spiny projections — covering the snout and head, which resemble the snakes of the mythological Medusa. This unique feature makes it one of the most sought-after pleco species in the world.

Like all Xingu endemics, L059 demands pristine, warm, highly oxygenated water with very strong current. It is an omnivore that feeds on algae, biofilm, and invertebrates. In captivity accept algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, frozen bloodworm, and artemia. Driftwood provides shelter and supplemental nutrition. Water changes of 30–50% weekly are recommended.

The Medusa Pleco is semi-aggressive toward conspecifics and should generally be kept as a solitary specimen. Its rarity and premium price reflect its extreme collector appeal. A dedicated Xingu biotope setup with fast flow, warm temperatures, and rocky decor is the ideal home for this remarkable species.
