Pethia meingangensis is endemic to the Meingang River drainage in Manipur state, northeastern India — a restricted range that contributes to its scarcity in the aquarium trade. It is a small to medium barb with a pale silvery body adorned with subtle dark lateral spots and a flush of red-orange on the dorsal and caudal fins, particularly pronounced in adult males. Its care requirements resemble those of other Pethia species but it benefits from slightly cooler temperatures reflecting its montane origin.

In the aquarium, this species thrives in clean, well-oxygenated, slightly soft to moderately hard water. It appreciates planted cover and open swimming space in roughly equal measure. Groups of six or more are recommended to allow natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress. Its rarity commands attention in any collection of Indian cyprinids.

Feeding Pethia meingangensis is straightforward: it takes micro-pellets, crushed flake, and small live or frozen invertebrates. Its placid temperament and modest size make it an ideal companion for other small Pethia and Devario species in a northeastern India biotope aquarium.
