Meinken's Apistogramma

Apistogramma meinkeni is a graceful Venezuelan species from the Orinoco system's blackwater tributaries, named after the German ichthyologist Hermann Meinken. Males develop characteristic filamentous extensions on the dorsal fin rays that trail behind the body as the fish swims, giving the species an almost ethereal appearance in a planted blackwater display.

The species requires soft, acidic conditions typical of Venezuelan blackwater, and does best when water is matured with leaf litter and driftwood to replicate its natural habitat. It is somewhat more reserved in behavior than Colombian forms and may initially be shy in a new setup.

Once settled, however, A. meinkeni becomes a confident and rewarding species that displays its best colors under subdued lighting and with appropriate dither fish to reduce wariness.
