Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos, commonly called the Maingano Cichlid after its collection locality, is one of the most visually distinctive mbuna species. Unlike most dimorphic cichlids, both males and females share the same vivid colouration — a brilliant blue body crossed by two jet-black horizontal stripes — though males develop slightly more intense iridescence and a blue blaze on the forehead.

Endemic to Likoma Island in Lake Malawi, Maingano inhabit the upper rocky zones of the island's shores, rarely descending below 5 metres. The species is highly territorial and aggressive toward conspecifics, particularly males toward other males. Despite its aggression, its consistent colouration in both sexes makes it one of the most visually rewarding mbuna to keep.

In the aquarium, Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos requires standard mbuna management — heavy rockwork, moderate overstocking, and a harem social structure. Because both sexes look similar, careful observation is needed to sex fish before purchase. Adults in prime condition display particularly intense blue colouration that makes them a centrepiece species.
