Melanochromis heterochromis

Melanochromis heterochromis is a boldly patterned mbuna from Lake Malawi exhibiting the genus's characteristic extreme sexual dichromatism: dominant males are jet-black with one or two vivid white or blue-white horizontal stripes, while females are bright yellow with dark stripes — the colours appearing to be completely inverted between sexes.

High aggression is a defining characteristic of the Melanochromis genus, and M. heterochromis is no exception. Males are intensely territorial and will fight rivals to the death if kept together in inadequate space. A single male kept with multiple females (minimum 1M:4F) in a tank exceeding 250 L with very dense rockwork gives the best outcomes. Females are maternal mouthbrooders holding for 21–28 days. This species is rewarding for experienced Malawi keepers who can manage its aggression appropriately but should not be attempted by beginners.
