Melanochromis perileucos

Melanochromis perileucos is one of the more striking Melanochromis species, with dominant males displaying crisp black and white colouration — a high-contrast pattern that makes this species especially dramatic during territorial displays. Females follow the genus pattern of inverted colouration, appearing white with black markings. This extreme colour contrast makes perileucos a visually impressive mbuna.

Behaviour follows Melanochromis norms: one of the more aggressive mbuna genera, with males that will aggressively pursue and kill rivals. Only one male per tank is safe under most circumstances. Multiple females (minimum four) in a tank of 250 L or more with maximal rockwork is the recommended configuration. Females are maternal mouthbrooders holding eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. An algae-based diet is essential to prevent Malawi bloat. Recommended for experienced keepers with dedicated large tanks.
