Melanoleuca Loach

Cobitis melanoleuca is a boldly marked spiny loach from the Amur River basin, distributed across northeastern China, Korea, and the Russian Far East. Its name literally means 'black and white', reflecting the high-contrast pattern of dark blotches and bars against a pale, almost white background — one of the most striking colour schemes among Cobitis species.

In the aquarium this species requires cool water conditions reflecting its temperate East Asian origin. It can be maintained at room temperature in most European and North American homes without supplementary heating in warmer months, though a chiller may be needed in summer. Deep fine substrate, excellent filtration, and a long-format tank to accommodate its active swimming patterns are all important.

Feeding consists of small sinking foods: micro pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworm. The Melanoleuca Loach is an excellent addition to a temperate East Asian biotope alongside gudgeon, bitterlings, and other Amur basin species. Its striking pattern and relatively accessible care requirements make it a stand-out European cold-water loach option.
