Melanoptera Snakehead

Channa melanoptera is a moderately large, relatively poorly documented snakehead from the river systems of northeastern India. It is characterised by dark olive-brown flanks, a somewhat flattened head typical of the genus, and particularly well-developed black margining on the dorsal and anal fins — the feature referenced by its species name. It is less frequently traded than the more charismatic species of the genus but is prized by collectors who seek to maintain the full diversity of Channidae.

Care requirements are typical for a mid-sized Indian snakehead. A secure, very large aquarium with strong filtration, limited tankmates, and a meaty diet serves this species well. As with all snakeheads, access to humid air above the water surface is non-negotiable, and the lid must be fully escape-proof.

Breeding data from captivity is sparse for this species. Based on related species, biparental or paternal guarding of a floating nest near the water surface is likely. Specialist keepers interested in documenting this species' behaviour are performing a service to the wider hobby.
