Meta Tetra

Hyphessobrycon metae, often called the Purple Tetra or Meta Tetra, is endemic to the Meta River system in Colombia. Males in prime condition display an extraordinary deep violet-purple flush across the flanks, contrasting with bold orange-red fin coloration — a combination rarely seen among small characins. Females are somewhat less vivid but still attractive. The species thrives in soft, slightly acidic water that mimics the llanos-influenced Meta drainage. It is a calmer species than its appearance suggests, mixing well with other peaceful South American fish. Groups of eight or more ensure the best coloration and most natural schooling behavior.
