Metriaclima callainos 'Cobalt Blue'

Metriaclima callainos 'Cobalt Blue' is among the best-known of all Lake Malawi cichlids, prized for the male's unmarked, brilliant cobalt-blue colouration that covers the entire body and fins. Unlike the common Zebra mbuna, this form lacks distinct black banding, giving it a clean, solid appearance that stands out in any Malawi community aquarium.

Females are a pale greyish-blue and considerably less striking. The species inhabits intermediate zones and rocky shorelines across multiple lake locales. Males are highly territorial, defending feeding and spawning territories aggressively against conspecifics and similarly coloured fish. Management in a 1M:3–4F harem significantly reduces male-on-male conflict. A maternal mouthbrooder, the female broods her clutch for 21–28 days. High water quality and an alkaline, hard water chemistry are non-negotiable for long-term success.
