Metriaclima sp. 'Msobo Magunga'

Metriaclima sp. 'Msobo Magunga' is one of the most colourful undescribed Metriaclima species, native to the Magunga locale on the northwestern shores of Lake Malawi. Males exhibit a remarkable bicolour pattern: the dorsal half of the body and dorsal fin are vivid orange to burnt-red, while the ventral half fades into deep blue. Females are entirely orange, making this one of the few mbuna species where females are brightly coloured.

The species inhabits rocky zones at intermediate depths, grazing algae from rock surfaces. As with all mbuna it is highly territorial, and males will aggressively compete for harems and territories. The 1M:3–4F harem ratio is essential in captivity. Maternal mouthbrooding females incubate eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. Strict water quality and a high-quality algae-based diet are key to maintaining the intense colouration of this species.
