Metriaclima sp. 'Ndumbi Gold'

Metriaclima sp. 'Ndumbi Gold' is an undescribed Metriaclima form associated with Ndumbi Reef in Lake Malawi, noted for the golden-yellow to xanthic colouration displayed by dominant males. This colour form is particularly sought after by collectors due to its departures from the typical blue-and-black mbuna pattern. Females are less intensely coloured, tending toward yellow-tan with faint markings.

The species inhabits rocky littoral zones and feeds primarily on algae (Aufwuchs) scraped from rock surfaces. Territorial behaviour is pronounced, and males aggressively maintain breeding territories among rock formations. A harem of one male to multiple females helps distribute male aggression. Females mouthbrood for approximately 21–28 days. Like all mbuna, water quality and hard, alkaline chemistry are non-negotiable for health and vibrant colouration.
