Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' was first collected from a single stream locality near Monte Carlo in Argentina and has since become one of the most widely cultivated carpet plants in the aquarium hobby. It fills a desirable niche between the ultra-demanding Glossostigma and HC Cuba and the less visually striking alternatives — it grows reliably with CO2 and moderate-to-high light but tolerates minor parameter fluctuations better than either of those species. The small, round, bright-green leaves are densely arranged on creeping stems that spread both horizontally and in overlapping layers, building up a lush, textured carpet of vivid green. Unlike Glossostigma, it tolerates partial shading slightly better and is less prone to sudden melt when conditions shift. In the aquarium it is used almost exclusively as a foreground carpet plant, where it creates a polished, professional-looking lawn that elevates any aquascape. It has become standard in competition layouts and is widely sold in in-vitro tissue culture form, which eliminates pests and algae commonly found in traditionally cultivated specimens.
