Microsorum musifolium 'Crocodile'

Microsorum musifolium 'Crocodile' is one of the most visually distinctive aquatic ferns available, distinguished by its broad, strap-shaped leaves whose entire surface is covered in raised, rounded bumps that strikingly resemble the scutes on crocodile skin. The leaves can grow very large in mature specimens, making this an impressive focal plant for medium to large aquariums.

In the aquarium, the plant is grown as an epiphyte, with its rhizome attached to driftwood or large stones. It is somewhat more demanding than standard Java Fern, preferring soft to moderately hard water, moderate lighting, and benefits clearly from CO2 supplementation for sustained healthy growth. Without CO2, growth is manageable but very slow.

The textured surface of the leaves is best appreciated in aquariums with clear water and side-lighting. It is a statement plant that works well as a solitary specimen or paired with fine-textured mosses that allow the bold leaf pattern to stand out. Avoid placing it in areas prone to significant algae growth, as the textured surface can be difficult to clean.
