Microsorum pteropus 'Latifolia'

Microsorum pteropus 'Latifolia' is characterised by unusually broad, paddle- to lance-shaped fronds that are significantly wider than those of the standard Java fern. The fronds display a deep, somewhat glossy green with a smooth or very lightly textured surface, and the overall effect in a mature plant is one of bold, commanding presence. It is a medium-to-large cultivar reaching 30–40 cm in established specimens.

The broad frond surface of 'Latifolia' provides an excellent canvas for algae under high light, so moderate lighting and good water circulation are important. In optimal conditions, it is a vigorous grower for a Java fern. Its wide fronds make it particularly attractive as a midground or background specimen in spacious aquascapes, where the bold leaf shape contrasts well with fine-textured stem plants, delicate mosses, or narrow-leaved grasses. Regular removal of older or algae-affected fronds keeps the plant looking its best.
