Microsorum pteropus 'Needle Leaf' pushes the Java fern form to its most extreme linear expression, producing fronds that are reduced to near thread-like proportions — typically less than 1 cm wide and up to 20–25 cm long. The result is a plant of extraordinary textural fineness that creates a highly distinctive effect when clustered on driftwood or rock, resembling a miniature conifer or fine-leaved fern. The fronds are mid-green and held stiffly upright, adding vertical interest.

This cultivar is among the most popular specialty Java fern forms for aquascaping due to the unique contrast its needle fronds provide against broad-leaved plants.
