Microsorum punctatum

Microsorum punctatum is a widespread tropical epiphytic fern found across a broad range from Asia to Africa. Unlike the narrow or divided forms of Microsorum, this species produces long, strap-shaped, undivided fronds with smooth margins — a simple, bold form that provides strong linear contrast alongside highly textured or divided plants. Mature leaves can reach 50 cm in very large tanks.

This species adapts to a wider range of conditions than many specialist ferns, tolerating moderate hardness and pH levels outside the typical soft-water preference of its relatives. It is grown as an epiphyte attached to large pieces of driftwood or stone, and its rhizome will spread along the surface of hardscape to anchor multiple fronds as the plant matures.

Microsorum punctatum is well suited to large display aquariums and biotope setups ranging from Asian to African themes. Its undivided leaf form pairs beautifully with finely lobed species such as Bolbitis heudelotii or complex Java Fern cultivars, creating effective textural dialogue within a single layout.
