Crenicichla missioneira is one of the most colourful pike cichlids of the temperate South American group, native to the upper Rio Uruguay in the Misiones region of Argentina and adjacent Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. Its common name references the Jesuit Missions (Misiones) of this historically significant border region. In breeding condition both sexes develop striking orange-red colouration on the flanks and fins, with bold dark spotting that intensifies dramatically.

Adapted to the cool, well-oxygenated rivers of the subtropical Misiones region, C. missioneira thrives at temperatures of 18–26°C. Sustained high tropical temperatures are harmful and should be avoided. This makes it an excellent choice for European aquarists who keep unheated or lightly heated tanks, particularly in spring and autumn.

At 18 cm it is one of the more compact mid-sized Crenicichla and can be maintained in a 180 L species tank. Breeding is achievable with seasonal temperature manipulation, and the species is among the most ornamental Crenicichla available from this southern bioregion.
