Miua Apistogramma

Apistogramma miua is a cryptic and delicate species from the blackwater rivers of the Brazilian Amazon. Named for the Rio Miua, a tributary of the lower Madeira system, this species occupies a very restricted natural range and is consequently rare in the hobby. Its coloration is subtle by Apistogramma standards — a pale yellow-brown body with a thin lateral stripe and a finely spotted caudal fin — but its understated elegance is deeply appealing to connoisseurs.

Care demands are high, reflecting its extreme blackwater origins. Only genuinely soft, highly acidic water produced by reverse osmosis and conditioned with natural tannin sources will allow this species to thrive and display its full charm.

A. miua is not a species for the casual hobbyist, but for those who maintain appropriate conditions it is a supremely rewarding and unusual addition to a specialist collection.
