Moa River Apistogramma

Apistogramma moae inhabits the Moa River system in the Brazilian Amazon, a blackwater environment characterized by extremely soft, tannin-stained water with very low conductivity. Males display slender, elongated bodies with rows of iridescent scale markings that produce a subtle but mesmerizing shimmer under soft aquarium lighting.

Like many species from the deeper interior of the Brazilian Amazon, A. moae is rarely exported and commands collector interest whenever it does appear in the trade. It requires the full blackwater treatment — RO water, leaf litter, minimal flow, and stable acidic chemistry — to maintain health and coloration.

In appropriate conditions, this species will settle into cave-spawning behavior and offer the keeper a glimpse of one of Amazonia's more elusive dwarf cichlids.
