Nemacheilus montanus is a compact, handsomely camouflaged stone loach from the highland streams of the Western Ghats in southwestern India. It inhabits cool, fast-flowing rivers over smooth boulders and coarse gravel, where its mottled brown-and-cream patterning provides near-perfect camouflage against the substrate. The species is one of several endemic Nemacheilids found in the biodiverse Western Ghats freshwater system.

In the aquarium, Montanus Stone Loach requires cooler-than-average tropical temperatures reflecting its highland origin — around 18–24°C is ideal. Excellent oxygenation, brisk water movement, and a mixed substrate of sand and smooth pebbles replicate the natural environment well. The species is peaceful and sociable in groups, spending its day actively foraging across the bottom.

Diet consists of frozen bloodworm, micro pellets, and small live invertebrates. The Western Ghats endemic designation gives this species genuine biogeographic interest, and it makes an excellent addition to a specialist South Indian biotope aquarium alongside endemic barbs and danios from the same region.
