Mopani Wood

Mopani Wood is sourced from the Mopane tree (Colophospermum mopane) native to southern Africa, and is one of the hardest and densest aquarium driftwoods available. Its most distinctive visual feature is a two-toned surface of pale golden-cream knots and bark remnants contrasting against the rich dark-brown grain of the inner wood, creating a naturally dynamic colour pattern that adds visual interest without additional decoration.

Like Malaysian Driftwood, Mopani Wood releases tannins that lower pH, soften water, and impart a warm amber tint to the aquarium. Its tannin release is particularly high compared to other driftwoods, so thorough pre-soaking is strongly recommended. The resulting blackwater conditions benefit softwater fish such as Amazonian tetras, Apistogramma cichlids, and neocaridina and caridina shrimp kept in soft-water setups.

Mopani Wood's exceptional hardness means it resists decomposition for many years in the aquarium, far outlasting softer wood types. Its weight ensures reliable sinking once fully waterlogged, and its dense surface supports moss and plant attachment without surface degradation.
