Mosaic Pleco L240

Hypancistrus sp. L240, the Mosaic Pleco, is a small and attractively patterned loricariid from the upper Orinoco drainage of Venezuela. Its body is covered in a fine tessellated pattern of small black-and-white or dark-and-pale markings that collectively create a mosaic-tile effect across the entire body surface. It is closely related to other small Orinoco Hypancistrus and shares similar care requirements.

At approximately 10 cm the Mosaic Pleco is a manageable species suitable for aquariums of 80 L or more. It requires warm water (26–30°C), moderate flow, and caves for shelter. Its omnivorous diet includes bloodworms, brine shrimp, algae wafers, and Repashy. Males are territorial toward each other and should each have their own cave.

The Mosaic Pleco is not as widely available as some other small Hypancistrus but has established breeding lines among specialist hobbyists. Its intricate pattern makes it a visually rewarding species that reveals new detail the closer it is observed under good aquarium lighting.
