Crenicichla multispinosa is a distinctive pike cichlid from the Pantanal and upper Rio Paraguay, notable for possessing more dorsal spines than is typical for the genus — the origin of its species name 'multispinosa'. This anatomical quirk, combined with a somewhat deeper body profile than most Crenicichla, makes it immediately recognisable to experienced enthusiasts. Bold dark lateral banding and a deep-keeled body give it a powerful, impressive appearance.

As a Pantanal species, C. multispinosa is exposed to dramatic seasonal water parameter fluctuations in the wild — from warm, rich floodwaters in the wet season to cooler, clearer pools in the dry season. This seasonal exposure has given it a practical tolerance of variable water conditions in captivity. Temperatures of 22–28°C and neutral to slightly acidic pH are suitable.

At 22 cm it is a manageable size for a dedicated 220 L species tank. C. multispinosa is an interesting addition to any Pantanal biotope aquarium and feeds well on standard carnivore foods. Breeding follows cave-spawning protocols common to the genus.
