Muraena Kuhli Loach

Pangio muraeniformis is the most dramatically elongated of all kuhli loaches, with a body length-to-depth ratio that rivals a small moray eel. Found in lowland rivers and swamps of Sumatra and Borneo, it reaches around 14 cm and bears bold alternating dark and pale bands across its entire length. Its unusual appearance makes it a notable centrepiece species for a Sundaland blackwater biotope.

Despite its imposing size relative to other Pangio, Muraena Kuhli Loach is entirely peaceful and will not harm even the smallest tankmates. It is a powerful burrower that requires deep, fine-grained substrate to express its natural digging behaviour. The tank should be set up with dark tannin-stained water, leaf litter, driftwood, and plenty of hiding spots.

Feeding is uncomplicated: high-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and daphnia form the bulk of the diet. This species is more active at night but will emerge during daylight when confident in its environment. A tightly secured lid is absolutely essential as Pangio muraeniformis is an escape artist par excellence.
