Nannocharax Taeniatus

Nannocharax taeniatus is characterised by a single, well-defined dark lateral stripe running the length of the body against a pale or cream background, making it one of the more easily identified members of its genus. Like all Nannocharax species, it is a substrate-associated fish that spends much of its time resting on the bottom between short bursts of activity.

This species requires the same biotope conditions as its relatives: soft acidic water, fine sand, leaf litter, dim lighting, and very gentle flow. When kept in groups of six or more in an appropriately furnished tank, individuals become noticeably more bold and venture further from cover, allowing for better observation.

Nannocharax taeniatus feeds well on small frozen invertebrates and micro-pellets. It is a subtle, rewarding species for aquarists who appreciate the complexity and diversity of Africa's smaller fish fauna beyond the more commonly kept cichlids and tetras.
