Nanochromis minor

Nanochromis minor is among the more diminutive members of its genus, reaching only about 6 cm. Found in the Congo River basin, it inhabits rocky and woody substrates in slow to moderately flowing water. The body patterning is more finely detailed than in larger Nanochromis species, with a series of lateral spots and subtle blue-green iridescence on the flanks and operculum.

As a cavity-spawner, N. minor is best kept as a pair with appropriate shelter — small crevices between flat rocks or terracotta cave hides are ideal. Both parents guard the eggs and free-swimming fry, and the pair bond is typically strong. The species is sensitive to poor water quality, so a mature, well-filtered tank is essential.

Soft, slightly acidic conditions (pH 5.5–6.8) are recommended for optimal health and breeding. Its small size makes it suitable for nano-style Congo biotope setups of 60 L or more.
