Narayani Barb

Puntius narayani is found in the Narayani river system draining the Himalayan foothills through Nepal into northern India. It is a solidly built, moderately sized barb with warm golden-olive flanks, a hint of orange in breeding males, and a well-defined dark spot at the caudal peduncle. It inhabits both standing and flowing waters, making it more adaptable than many specialist Indian barbs.

In the aquarium it requires minimal special care beyond clean water and a varied diet. It is a classic schooling species best kept in groups of eight or more in a planted tank with room to swim. Its adaptability to a range of water conditions makes it a reliable choice for hobbyists wanting to keep authentic South Asian aquarium species without demanding biotope specifics.

Spawning follows the standard barb scatter pattern. Well-conditioned adults will spawn readily over spawning mops or fine-leaved plants in a dedicated breeding setup. Eggs hatch within 48 hours and the fry are easy to raise.
