Necklace Spiny Eel

This necklace-patterned domestic trade form of Macrognathus aral is recognised by a prominent series of dark spots running along the dorsal midline, giving the appearance of a necklace when viewed from above. The pattern is consistent and well defined, making it easy to identify and distinct from other commonly traded forms of this species.

Its tolerant nature and readiness to feed make it an outstanding first spiny eel for aquarists new to the group. It accepts virtually all meaty foods immediately and adapts to a very wide range of water parameters, including the harder, more alkaline tap water that many keepers have available. A soft sandy substrate, a sealed lid, and basic hiding structures are the primary requirements.

Bloodworm, tubifex, earthworms, and sinking pellets are all eaten readily. It is peaceful toward medium to large community tankmates and can be kept alongside barbs, loaches, corydoras, and robust tetras. Its reliable availability and easy temperament make it a staple entry-level spiny eel in the hobby.
